NFC South Update
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Bucs have used there No. 1 Priority Waiver to claim former Houston Texans’ safety D. J. Swearinger. Tampa Bay was among the worst defenses in terms of stopping the opposition’s passing attack in 2014 and Swearinger has not demonstrated a consistent ability to play sound assignment football. However, the 23-year-old safety is a playmaker and tone-setter. He has the potential to add some attitude and tenacity to a defensive backfield that the Buccaneer faithful have not seen since the days of Rhonde Barber and John Lynch. Swearinger wore out his welcome in Houston as it appears he did not buy into the culture head coach Bill O’Brien is attempting to impress upon the Texans’ locker room. Swearinger doesn’t strike CPGM as a good fit in the Tampa 2 defensive scheme but Lovie Smith and Jason Licht must believe he has enough upside and talent to overcome the coverage deficiencies he has shown to this point in his career.
