AFC South Update
When the Indianapolis Colts used their 2015 1st round selection on wide receiver Phillip Dorsett there was some belief that 2015 would be T.Y. Hilton’s final year in Indy. Entering the last year of his rookie contract ($665,000) and with little to know head-way made during the spring it seemed that if a deal were to get done it would have to be consummated during training camp. And that it did. The speedy Hilton has agreed to a 5-year contract extension worth $65 million with $39 million guaranteed money. Hilton surpassed Reggie Wayne as the Colts’ top receiving option two seasons ago on the way to back-to-back (2013, 2014) 1,000 yard campaigns. Hilton is often compared to the Washington Redskins’ DeSean Jackson because of their blazing speed, diminutive size and big-play ability.
T.Y. Hilton – 214 rec. 3,289 yards 19TDs (2012 – 2014)
DeSean Jackson – 183 rec. 3,201 17 TDs (2012 – 2014)
Now that T. Y. Hilton has been “locked up” long term the Colts will turn their attention to left tackle Anthony Castonzo and the “Big Fish” Andrew Luck. As for Hilton, despite an impressive collection of receivers and tight ends he will continue to be the Colts’ #1. Newly signed Andre Johnson will start opposite Hilton as he enters the twilight of his impressive career and the Colts appear to be set at receiver for the long haul with Donte Mocrief and Dorsett waiting in the wings.
