The word of the week is “HURT”. Many fantasy owners had to feel some kind of hurt with Dalvin Cook and Chris Carson going down with major injuries and starting quarterbacks Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota sidelined with injuries that will hamper them once they do get back on the field. Other than the injuries in Week 4 there were many more instances of HURT. Jay Ajayi and the Dolphins offense, HURT. Isaiah Crowell owners, HURT. Amari Cooper’s new quarterback situation coupled with hands of butter, HURT. Panthers having 444 total yards against the Patriots defense and Christian McCaffrey averaging 2.7 yards per carry, HURT. Big Ben not seeing Antonio Brown wide open and having under 40 yards receiving, HURT.
The biggest hurt for me this week, even bigger than my team losing their first game, was the aforementioned Cook ACL injury. I championed Cook as the best running back to come into the league and will be heartbroken not to see him out there for the remainder of the season. The vision, balance and burst from Cook is special and although he was 2nd in the league in rushing when he went down, I don’t believe we even got to see the best of him in his first four games as a pro. Now I’m hoping he bounces back to form in 2018 while lamenting what could’ve been a very special rookie season. Now I got that off my chest let’s turn the page to the highly anticipated CPGM Week 5 start/sit.
Fantasy Football Start/Sit – Week 5
Start – Dak Prescott vs Packers
The Dallas Cowboys came up a bit short in the divisional playoff round against the Green Bay Packers last season with a Herculean performance by kicker Mason Crosby. Even though the Cowboys lost that game, one thing that stood out to me was the Cowboys were in good hands with Dak. Prescott went toe to toe with Aaron Rodgers in a shootout as he passed for over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. The second year quarterback has spring-boarded his success from last season and has thrown 8 touchdowns in his first four game of 2017. With Prescott attacking down the field more in his last two games, he gets a nice match-up against a Packers defense that can be had in the passing game. Looking at the statistics the Packers are Top 5 in the league allowing a minuscule 188.5 passing yards per game but I’m not buying that due to beating up on Mike Glennon, Andy Dalton and a Russell Wilson led team with a terrible offensive line. The Cowboys will be able to contain the Packers pass rushers and take advantage of the Packers secondary similarly to last season. This game should be another shootout; win, lose or draw Dak should put up great fantasy numbers this week.
- Deshaun Watson vs Chiefs
- Eli Manning vs Chargers
- Phillip Rivers vs Giants
Sit – Andy Dalton vs Bills
I can’t lie the Cincinnati Bengals offense have been performing better with new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor. The offensive philosophy is to get the ball out of the hands of Andy Dalton quicker in order to protect their weak offensive line and get their play-makers the rock as soon as possible. The last two weeks Dalton has an incredible 80% completion rate for 498 yards 6 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. So why bench him? For starters he boosted his numbers in a major way playing against the lowly Cleveland Browns who he always dominates against. Secondly, the top ranked Buffalo Bills scoring defense is coming to town fresh off of beating down the Atlanta Falcons. The Bills are a physical bunch up front who should outmatch the Bengals sub-par offensive line. New head coach Sean McDermott got these Bills playing like the old Carolina Panthers defense when they made their Super Bowl run.
Start – Leonard Fournette Jacksonville Jaguars
Lets just call a spade a spade, Blake Bortles is not a good quarterback when he plays in the states. Bortles reverted back to his old self last week against the New York Jets completing just 42% of his passes for 140 yards in a loss. Although the Jaguars defense needs to improve against the run, they still possess one of the best young defenses in the entire league and the D will be the catalyst if they want to get into the playoffs. Running the football with Leonard Fournette and playing strong defense will be their formula going forward. I was hesitant on Fournette’s success coming into the season because of teams not respecting the Jaguars passing offense but at the end of the day he is a must play due to the volume he will get and his propensity for scoring touchdowns. This week on paper might not be a favorable matchup for the Jaguars offense due to the Steelers allowing the second least amount of yards per game in the entire league, but a deeper look shows that they can be ran against. The Steelers defense is allowing 4.6 yards per carry, given up 4 rushing touchdowns and 5 runs for at least 20 yards this season. I believe the Jaguars defense should keep them in the game long enough for them to continue to feed Fournette making him a good fantasy play this week.
- Bilal Powell vs Browns
- Carlos Hyde vs Colts
- Duke Johnson vs Jets
- Aaron Jones vs Cowboys
- Wayne Gallman vs Chargers
Chris Johnson vs Philadelphia Eagles
I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Chris Johnson but for Week 5 it is best you keep him on your bench. The Cardinals face an Eagles defense that ranks 2nd in rushing yards allowed with teams figuring out that you need to throw the football to have success against Philadelphia. The Cardinals are no strangers to passing the football and will probably come out with a game plan to spread the Eagles defense out and attack down the field with their receivers against the banged up Eagles secondary. The Cardinals will more than likely replicate last week’s performance by inserting Andre Ellington in the lineup over Chris Johnson.
Start – DeVante Parker vs Titans
Within an inconsistent Dolphins offense led by Jay Cutler, DeVante Parker has been the most consistent player on the roster. The Dolphins in the past two weeks have scored only 1 touchdown, a last drive effort against the New York Jets which yielded them there only points in the last 2 games. #NeverCutler is a real thing as he is out here “stealing” millions of dollars from the organization who became desperate after losing starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill for the season. Cutler is just going through the motions but luckily for Parker owners, he is the guy being fed within the offense. Parker totaled 145 yards, 14 catches and a touchdown for a team who was damn near shut out by the New York Jets and laid a goose egg against the New Orleans Saints. Yes, the Saints defense shut a team out, that’s how bad it is for the Dolphins right now. Call me silly but I’m still starting Parker as he gets to go up against a struggling Titans defense who just allowed DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller and the Houston Texans to hang 57 points on them. The Titans defense has allowed a league high 11 touchdown passes and it’s a good bet Parker gets 1 on Sunday.
- Larry Fitzgerald vs Eagles
- Randall Cobb vs Cowboys
- Sterling Shepard vs Chargers
- Adam Theilen vs Bears
- Tyrell Williams vs Giants
Alshon Jeffery vs Cardinals
Patrick Peterson treatment, enough said. The Eagles will need to attack other areas on the field.
Start – Charles Clay vs Bengals
We can’t ignore Charles Clay anymore. He has been one of the most consistent tight ends in the league this season. While most of us have been juggling through Kyle Rudolph, Hunter Henry and Eric Ebron; Clay has been racking up major fantasy points week after week and is now a Top 5 fantasy tight end. He is the Bills top receiving threat and should get even more targets with the injury to Jordan Matthews. Start Him.
- Evan Engram vs Chargers
- Ben Watson vs Raiders
- Austin Sefarian-Jenkins vs Browns
Eric Ebron vs Panthers
This guy Eric Ebron. Is he the new Jared Cook of the NFL? Blessed with amazing size/speed talent at a position where teams tend to attack defenses with their athletic tight ends, Ebron have teased us time after time. Enough is enough, please don’t fall for the hope of him putting it all together as he still doesn’t seem to have mastered the Lions offense or the ability to catch the football consistently. What’s even worse for Ebron’s fantasy prospects is that backup tight end Darren Fells seems to be getting more opportunities in the Lions passing game.
Defense to stream
Miami Dolphins vs Titans
If Marcus Mariota doesn’t play this weekend it will be a long day for the Titans offense with Matt Cassel calling the shots. Fire up the Dolphins defense who despite the play of their offense has been playing good ball.
