Fantasy Football Waiver Wire (Add/Drop) – Week 5

The NFC has been turned upside down. The Eagles are atop the NFC East in what figured to be a rebuilding season with a rookie QB under center, The Falcons just dropped 48 points on last year’s divisional champs the Carolina Panthers who won 15 regular season games last season and now lead the NFC South. The Rams are now 3-1 and lead the NFC West after beating both the Seahawks and the Cardinals. The “Any Given Sunday” moniker for the NFL is apt and now with Carson Palmer and Cam Newton battling concussion symptoms and bye weeks in full mode, the fantasy football waiver wire will be your best friend.

(Add recommendations will include players owned in less than 50% of leagues)

Quarterbacks

Add – Carson Wentz Philadelphia Eagles

If you beat the rush last week and added Carson Wentz then good job but for the rest of us Wentz is a must add for teams who are struggling at the QB position. As mentioned above Palmer and Newton might not be able to suit up this week after suffering concussions in Week 4. It will be tough for Palmer to be able to get on the field for Thursday Night Football and if he does I’m still not sure he will be efficient. Newton has a little more time to get ready for Monday Night Football but I would be safe and add Wentz to start this weekend against the Detroit Lions. The Lions defense just got torched by Brian Hoyer for over 300 yards and 2 touchdowns and continues to be a target for opposing quarterbacks. Wentz fresh off his bye week and getting an extra week of preparation should have a great game against the hapless Lions defense who has given up 12 passing touchdowns in their 4 games. Not only will Wentz be a fantasy viable QB this week but he should also help you for the rest of the season as head coach Doug Pederson and offensive coordinator Frank Reich have done a tremendous job game planning and putting their young QB in advantageous situations.

Other Players who deserve an Add
  • Sam Bradford Minnesota Vikings
  • Brian Hoyer Chicago Bears

Drop – Marcus Mariota Tennessee Titans

Running Backs

Add – Terrance West Baltimore Ravens

Terrance West is now the man in Baltimore after the release of Justin Forsett for the second time this season? Good question. I’ll say he gets the first crack at it after having a terrific game last week running for 113 yards and a touchdown against the Oakland Raiders. Yea, I know I’ve been on the Kenneth Dixon train as I believe he will have a role in the offense but I’m also a West guy who saw his potential before he entered the NFL. If West continues producing and puts in the work and dedication he lacked early in his career then he will be tough to take out of the starting lineup. After struggling to run the ball in the first 3 weeks of the season the Baltimore Ravens future for the running game is looking bright with the emergence of West and the now healthy Dixon set to make his NFL debut in Week 5.

  • Darren Sproles Philadelphia Eagles
  • Wendell Smallwood Philadelphia Eagles
  • Kenneth Dixon Baltimore Ravens

Drop – Justin Forsett Baltimore Ravens

Wide Receivers

Add –  Eddie Royal Chicago Bears

Quincy Enunwa is the top WR add here for players with an ownership under 50% but I just want to speak about Eddie “Nine Lives/One month fantasy worthy” Royal. Yea, that was a lot to digest but you can never kill the fantasy relevance of Royal for those stretch of games where he produces top notch numbers every season. The Eddie Royal season is among us fantasy owners and he will be a sneaky pickup off your waiver wire this week. With Brian Hoyer now the guy under center, he will lean heavily on the short to intermediate passing game targeting Zach Miller and Royal. He can be a PPR fantasy asset as long as Hoyer is the starting quarterback with the potential to score a couple of TDs in the upcoming weeks. The Bears will likely be playing catch up a lot this season as their defense which wasn’t particularly strong now has a plethora of injuries. As we all know catch up points, AKA garbage points is a fantasy footballer’s dream or demise if you are going up against it. Add Royal.

Other Players who deserve an Add
  • Quincy Enunwa New York Jets
  • Cole Beasley Dallas Cowboys
  • Chris Hogan New England Patriots
  • Robert Woods Buffalo Bills

Drop – Tyler Lockett Seattle Seahawks

Tight Ends

Add – Hunter Henry San Diego Chargers

That Hunter Henry guy sure looks like a good NFL tight end. Rookie tight ends usually take a while to transition to the NFL game but Henry looks like he is ready right now. He reminds me of his predecessor and mentor Antonio Gates in his 30s of course as he finds a way to get open in Phillip Rivers’ sweet spot. Even when Gates returns from injury I still believe Henry will be a factor and major contributor in the depleted Chargers pass catching corps. I’m going to let the cat out of the bag early and say he is a must start this week against the Raiders. Henry is an easy scoop and start and should produce TE1 numbers going forward.

Other Players who deserve an Add
  • Cameron Brate Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Clive Walford Oakland Raiders

Drop – Dwayne Allen Indianapolis Colts
