Josh Allen 2019 NFL Draft Profile

College: Kentucky

Height: 6’5

CPGM Headley’s Prospect Notes

Strengths

  • His versatility is eye opening, ability to cover like a DB in pass coverage
  • Excellent feet as he drops in zone coverage
  • Uses arms effectively keeping blockers away from his chest
  • Speed to power is easy for him
  • Plays standing up so effortlessly that I like him best in a 3-4 scheme at the next level, otherwise you might take away some of his super powers
  • Pursues the football quickly
  • Can get around the edge using his active hands to brush linemen off of him
  • Draws lots of holding calls

Weaknesses

  • Had an issue with Georgia TE’s as they got the best of him as pass blockers
  • Still has to develop more as a pass rusher (inside move and counters)
  • Run defense can improve
  • Occasionally becomes an arm tackler in space causing him to miss tackles

Strengths

  • He is quick to the point-of-attack, first to usually get his hands up on the would be blocker helping him to win the point-of-attack and disengage when he sees fit
  • He is explosive, quick off the snap; played in a stand up position more often than not and looked comfortable in it
  • Has closing speed you want when getting behind the line of scrimmage; because of that first step he can go inside the would be blocker or up and around the would be blocker
  • He is a guy who seems to find the football
  • When out in pass coverage he is good at jamming at the line of scrimmage given the opportunity; looks relishes it and is comfortable in zone coverage
  • Has great spatial awareness and instincts following the quarterbacks eyes taking away would be throws
  • This is the type of player that will allow a defensive coordinator to develop plays around his skill-set and abilities to get other players involved on the defense to maximize the defense’s talent
  • Would love to see him stand up on the edge in a 34 defense

Weaknesses

  • He is not the most flexible or fluid, bendy type of pass rusher but what he offers is good enough with everything else he brings to the table
  • I did see him head up field a little too much for my liking trying to make a play or two
