Chris Borland Retires

NFC West Update

One year into his rookie contract inside linebacker Chris Borland has decided to retire. Citing Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) as his concern, the up and comer is calling it quits. Borland, took over for recently retired Patrick Willis in Week 7 of the 2014 season and performed exceptionally, grading out as Pro Football Focus’ 4th rated inside linebacker. Borland has been diagnosed with two concussions during his football career but may have suffered more. The 24-year-old had the following to say when asked about his decision, “From what I’ve researched and what I’ve experienced, I don’t think it’s worth the risk.” With Borland and Willis no longer in the picture the 49ers are thin at what has been a position of incredible strength for the last five to six years. However, the cupboard isn’t bare as NaVorro Bowman is still on the roster and if he can return to form after suffering a gruesome knee injury that forced him to miss the entire 2014 season the 49ers will have one less concern at inside linebacker.
