Fantasy Football Start/Sit – Week 2

Start – Carson Palmer vs Bears

What a refreshing sight to see one of my late round QB sleepers tear it up in Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints. Palmer threw for 307 yards and 3 touchdowns and proved to fantasy owners that if Carson is healthy he is a great fantasy quarterback. He gets another excellent matchup in Week 2 against a Bears defense that has struggled over the last few seasons and allowed Aaron Rodgers to throw for 3 touchdowns to just 5 incompletions last week. Palmer is now 17-6 since joining the Cardinals in 2013 winning his last 7 games and throwing for 1933 yards 14 TDs to just 3 interceptions in that 7 game span. Fire up Palmer again this week in Bruce Arians’ vertical passing offense.

Notables – Eli Manning vs. Falcons, Ryan Tannehill vs. Jaguars, Sam Bradford vs. Cowboys

Sit – Cam Newton vs Texans

In what figures to be a defensive matchup this week for the Panthers, QB Cam Newton and the Panthers offensive line faces off against J.J. Watt and the Houston Texans. Last week the Panthers could not get on track offensively against a lesser opponent in the Jaguars. Newton only targeted star tight end Greg Olsen twice and was 9 for 19 (47.4%) targeting his wide receivers. It will be a tough season for Cam each week as he searches for someone to replace his number 1 receiver Kelvin Benjamin who is out for the season with an ACL injury. Newton can possibly salvage his fantasy output by scoring a rushing TD but I wouldn’t bank on it and would rather start a quarterback who will get it done with his arm.

Notables – Kirk Cousins vs Rams, Jay Cutler vs Cardinals

Running Back

Start – Carlos Hyde vs Steelers

The Carlos Hyde break out campaign has officially started as he made the Mike Zimmer’s defense look silly on Monday Night Football. Hyde bullied through the Vikings defense totaling 168 rushing yards and 2 TDs. I’m doubling up on the Niners back this week against a Steelers defense which allowed Dion Lewis to gain 120 total yards. Head coach Jim Tomsula is not shy about what he wants to do on offense which is continuing to pound the rock with his new star running back. Expect the Niners to run the ball early and often making Hyde a must start in fantasy circles.

Notables – Mark Ingram vs. Bucs, Lamar Miller vs. Jaguars, Justin Forsett vs. Raiders

Sit – Frank Gore vs New York Jets

Interesting stat for all the football brainiacs…The Indianapolis Colts has gone 41 straight games without a 100 yard rusher and only has one in Andrew Luck’s 55 career games (Vick Ballard 2012). So enter Frank Gore, the offseason acquisition who was picked to be the solution to the Colts’ running back woes. If Week 1 was any indication of how the Colts will use Gore then the streak without a 100 yard rusher will get to 56 games. The Colts threw the ball 49 times compared to 17 rushing attempts, with Gore carrying the ball 8 times for 31 yards against the Bills’ tough defense. Expect more of the same for Gore who faces a similar defense in the New York Jets this week.

Notables – LeGarrette Blount vs. Bills, Latavius Murray vs. Ravens

Wide Receiver

Start – Brandin Cooks

All the Brandin Cooks fantasy owners take a deep breath and RELAX. Cooks drew a tough match up last week against All Pro cornerback Patrick Peterson who covered and blanketed him all over the field on Sunday. Talk about a 180 as Cooks gets a sweet matchup against a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that gave up 4 TDs to rookie Marcus Mariota (IN THE FIRST HALF). Look for Cooks and the Saints passing offense to get off in the Super Dome against the reeling Buccaneers.

Notables – Mike Evans vs. Saints, John Brown vs. Bears, Jarvis Landry vs. Jaguars, Terrence Williams vs. Eagles,
Jordan Matthews vs. Cowboys

Sit – Brandon Marshall vs Colts

I sat B Marsh last week against the Browns and he made me look bad winning the matchup against pro bowl CB Joe Haden. So what do I do this week? Sit him again against a better cornerback in Vontae Davis. Just ask Sammy Watkins, as he was held to 0 catches last week against Davis. If Marshall proves me wrong this week I promise to not sit him ever again as he would of got the best of two top tier corners in back-to-back weeks.

Notables – Andre Johnson vs. Jets, Alshon Jeffrey vs. Cardinals

Tight End

Start – Martellus Bennett vs Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals defense puts heat on opposing quarterbacks, plays tough man-to-man defense on the outside, and gives up big numbers to opposing tight ends. Each defense has a weakness and the Cardinals defense which allowed the most yards to tight ends last season, struggles to cover big bodies in the middle of the field. With Alshon Jeffrey’s setback to his hamstring the Bears should give Bennett all the targets he can handle this upcoming Sunday. Do not hesitate and start Bennett.

Notables – Austin Sefarian Jenkins vs. Saints, Tyler Eifert vs. Chargers, Dwayne Allen vs. Jets

Sit – Jordan Reed vs Rams

Many fantasy owners rushed to claim the talented tight end Jordan Reed as he produced 63 yards and TD last week against the Miami Dolphins. While I do agree that was a savvy add as the Redskins number 1 receiver DeSean Jackson is sidelined this week, I don’t think this is the week you start Reed facing a stingy Rams defense that should own the Redskins offensive line in their week 2 matchup. The Rams defense is the real deal flashing speed and quickness at all levels of their defense. Sit Reed this week and fire him up next week.

Notables – Delanie Walker vs. Browns, Jared Cook vs. Redskins

Start – Titans D vs Browns

Johnny Manziel is starting…Enough said.

Sit – Cowboys D vs Eagles

Eagles found their stride in the second half of Monday Night Football, I expect that to continue.
