Geno Smith

Geno Smith suffers broken jaw

AFC East Update

It was supposed to be a pivotal offseason for New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith (it is/was). With a  new coaching regime in place led by head coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, Smith would likely have his best and last chance to stake his claim as the unquestioned quarterback of the Jets. What started as a position battle during the spring with Ryan Fitzpatrick became Geno’s job to lose with the caveat that he would have the first six games or so of the regular season to prove himself. Well, all that is a moot point now that Smith is expected to miss as many as 10 weeks after he suffered a broken jaw in an altercation with former teammate linebacker Ikemefuna “IK” Enemkpali. Enemkpali has since been released after delivering what Bowles described as a “sucker punch” to Smith’s jaw. The confrontation stems from a $600 debt Smith owed Enemkpali. According to Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter, Enemkpali purchased a plane ticket for Smith to attend a football camp that he was hosting. Smith’s brother was in a serious accident and failed to attend the camp. Apparently it was Smith’s intention to pay Enemkpali back but he had not done so yet. Enemkpali confronted Smith about the debt and the rest is history. Unfortunately, for the 24-year-old Enemkpali a 2014 6th round draft pick, he is now out of work; and Smith who according to reports was having a strong training camp won’t be the Jets’ starting quarterback in September and may never have the opportunity again in New York.
