Stevie Johnson to take pay cut or be released by the 49ers

NFC West Update

Diana Marie Russini, of NBC4 Sports, reports that the San Francisco 49ers have released the veteran receiver saving the team $5.5 – $6 million in cap space. Johnson, had a stretch of three consecutive 1,000 yard seasons in Buffalo prior to being traded to San Francisco. Johnson is a possession receiver but during his most productive seasons demonstrated an ability to get behind defenders due to precise route-running and deceptive long speed. Last year’s 35/435/3 line was underwhelming but the 49ers’ offense as a whole was lackluster. The 28-year-old will probably fall into the second or third tier of free agent wide-outs this off-season.

Updating this previous report the 49ers will ask Johnson to take a pay cut first. If both sides cannot reach an agreement he will then be released
